Myfatherwasaself-taughtmandolinplayer.Hewasoneofthebeststringinstrumentplayersinourtown.Hecouldnotreadmusic,butifheheardatuneafewtimes,hecouldplayit.Whenhewasyounger,hewasamemberofasmallcountrymusicband.Theywouldplayatlocaldancesandonafewoccasionswouldplayforthelocalradiostation.HeoftentoldushowhehadauditionedandearnedapositioninabandthatfeaturedPatsyClineastheirleadsinger.Hetoldthefamilythatafterhewashiredheneverwentback.Dadwasaveryreligiousman.Hestatedthattherewasalotofdrinkingandcursingthedayofhisauditionandhedidnotwanttobearoundthattypeofenvironment.

    Occasionally,Dadwouldgetouthismandolinandplayforthefamily.Wethreechildren:Trisha,MonteandI,GeorgeJr.,wouldoftensingalong.SongssuchastheTennesseeWaltz,HarborLightsandaroundCh
